International Business: Swiss Post opens branch in Norway

Press release dated 25.01.2012

Swiss Post is expanding its presence in Scandinavia: Swiss Post International opened a branch in Norway at the beginning of the year. This provides Swiss online dealers with the possibility of significantly reducing customs clearance costs for importing to the non-EU country of Norway and cutting goods costs for Norwegian consumers.

With the opening of Swiss Post International Norway in Oslo, Swiss Post now provides online dealers in Switzerland with the a collective customs clearance option for several consignments. This reduces the costs for customs clearance of every single goods consignment significantly. In addition to customs clearance, Swiss Post International Norway also organises fiscal representation and payment of valued added tax. Swiss mail order retailers can therefore provide consumers with a quote representing the total price including customs clearance costs already on the internet. This makes it far more attractive for Norwegian consumers to order small goods from Switzerland.

Strong growth rates in online commerce

Annual growth rates of some ten per cent are expected in the mail-order market. Until now, Norwegian customs clearance costs have made goods so expensive that Norway was hardly interesting as an import country for online dealers. But the non-EU country of Norway has excellent preconditions for online commerce: it has a high internet connection levels and above-average income per citizen. With the new service of Swiss Post, the terms for online dealers and their consumers have improved.

Globally unique range of Swiss Post

Swiss Post is the only mail company to provide business customers with this import solution to Norway. In addition, Swiss Post International Norway offers Norwegian companies innovative services in direct marketing, comprehensive services in respect of newspapers and magazines, flexible offers for small goods consignment and the secure shipment of business mail. For imports to Switzerland, which is also not part of the EU, comprehensive customs clearance solutions are already available at the branches of Swiss Post International in Europe, the US and Asia.

In four countries of Scandinavia

In addition to the new branch in Scandinavia, Swiss Post International is also present in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. All four branches belong to Swiss Post International Scandinavia, which employs a total workforce of 22 people.
